A recent study by a market research firm in France presents some fascinating findings about the perceptions of women and their choice of personal care products. The study, involving more than 500 participants, queried women about their use of “organic” and “natural” products.
The vast majority of respondents were bewildered about what it all means. Packaging that was suggestive of “organic” or “natural” ingredients, logos, and certifications are all points of misunderstanding. Clearly, better packaging for this segment of personal care products is needed.
In addition to the confusion over labeling, women have plenty of questions about the effectiveness of natural products. While they often have the purchase intention to buy natural skin and body care products, they are seemingly willing to forego their ideology to buy a chemical-laden product because of the perception that it will be more effective in solving their skin concerns. Women want results.
What they usually don’t realize, however, is that many natural ingredients are not only effective, they are proven so both scientifically and by years of tried-and-true use. For example, the following ingredients boast a decent body of research that shows their usefulness in skin repair:
- Shea butter, with its rich fatty acid content and plentiful vitamin a and e, is an effective anti-inflammatory, making it very soothing, hydrating, and highly absorbable for skin. It also offers protection from environmental and free-radical damage
- Macadamia oil contains the highest plant source of palmitoleic acid, closely resembling human skin sebum. It’s also a protectant, antimicrobial, and natural emollient
- Rosehip oil – also rich in fatty acids, and containing trans-retinoic acid, responsible for skin rejuvenation, scar repair (trauma and surgical) and quicker healing, and repairs skin subjected to excessive sunlight. The linoleic and linolenic acids in rosehip have also been shown to reduce pigmentation of the skin and when used regularly it has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Where can a consumer find products that contain these helpful ingredients? One such place is Moor Spa, a Canadian company offering products with ingredients that only come from natural sources, with no synthetic preservatives or petroleum derivatives. Artificial colours and fragrances are also left out. Their 95% Organic Moisturizer is a light but rich moisturizer suitable for all skin types, but is especially good for mature skin.
